Gary Portelli

Racing has been in Gary’s blood as his Mother held her own training licence in the 1980’s and his Grandfather was also a jockey.

Both Gary and his brother Troy were champion equestrian riders which began soon after they could walk.

The family moved from Sydney to Orange in western New South Wales in the early 80s. Gary and Troy spent their youth riding horses, and were "mums" track work riders and breakers before Gary took over the training licence in 1990.

An opportunity arose and Gary, being Gary, took it by the horns and set up new digs at Warwick Farm, Sydney, where he watched the methods of fellow trainers John Hawkes, Guy Walter, Clarry Conners and Steve Englebrecht. It was this move that allowed the boys to gain a better quality of horse which in turn has led them on to bigger and better things.

The highlight of his careers so far would be the Group 1 Golden Slipper victory of outstanding filly She Will Reign, winning four of her first five starts, culminating in a stunning two plus length victory in the $3.5m showcase for two-year-olds..

Other victories that stand out include the wins of Rebel Dane in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and the Group 1 Manikato Stakes before a trip to Hong Kong for the Group 1 International Sprint.

Rena’sLady victory in the Group 1 AJC Oaks, followed by travelling to New Zealand for the Group 1 Railway Handicap win of Gold Trail are also precious wins.

Other memorable occasions include the Group 3 win of juvenile Single Bullet, stable favourite Marwin Gold on his 20th win as an 11-year-old as well as the Group 3 Skyline Stakes win of I'm All The Talk.

It’s the passion for racing, enhancing and preserving his client's investments that Gary and his family look forward to everyday.

"I am a great believer in a team environment as far as my stable staff is concerned. It may be my name printed as trainer but it is having a great team of staff that help get the best out of each and every horse" - Gary Portelli
