Portelli Stars Shine At Warwick Farm Trials
Aug 25, 2017
Single Bullet matched motors with Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign at the Warwick Farm trials this morning but it came as little surprise to Gary Portelli.
“It was exactly what we wanted to see today,” Portelli said.
“We wanted Single Bullet to join in to make a gallop of it and Ben (Melham) rode her for him to level up. They hit the line nicely. Both horses are on track for big springs and both are very good horses. We were tickled pink.”
Over the autumn, Portelli maintained there was very little between his two gun youngsters before revealing that that Singlet Bullet will launch his spring in the $125,000 Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Royal Randwick on September 16.
“You go back through the extracts and I said all along that he was showing as much as her all the way through but just wasn’t mature enough to cope with the preparation. He was only a light-framed horse,” said Portelli.
“He missed the start at Wyong that day and lost the plot here at Warwick Farm when he was an odds-on favourite. He just wasn’t there mentally and this time you’ll see a stronger colt.”
Ben Melham, who has ridden She Will Reign in her last four outings, said The Everest contender had improved since he last had the chance to sit on her back.
“She has definitely filled out and her weight suggests that too. I couldn’t have asked her to go any better today,” Melham said.
“She is a competitive horse so was always going to trial well. It was our first trial and we didn’t want to do too much so I just sat against her and she was strong to the line.
“I wouldn’t have been able to pull her up if I gave her a click.
“To me she has improved a little bit. Most importantly though, she has furnished mentally and physically.”
