Golden Slipper-winning trainer Gary Portelli sees gold at Magic Millions Perth yearling sales

Feb 20, 2018

Golden Slipper-winning trainer Gary Portelli is optimistic he can repeat a successful buying mission at the Magic Millions Perth yearling sale’s opening session today.

Triumphant in the world’s richest juvenile feature last year with She Will Reign, Portelli has inspected a Blackfriars filly, who is a half-sister to his smart two-year-old Secret Lady.

The yearling is being offered by Gingin-based Gold Front Thoroughbreds.

Choisir filly Secret Lady won over 1100m at Rosehill last November.

“We bought Secret Lady here for $150,000,” Portelli said.

“We also took home a Patronize colt for $46,000. He’s named Patron Black and he won at Canberra two weeks ago in his second race.

“We’ve set Patron Black for next month’s Black Opal and Secret Lady is a Golden Slipper hope.”

Portelli said he was impressed by Secret Lady’s yearling half-sister and planned to bid on her.

“She appears the type who will mature into a 1600m prospect,” he said.

“Secret Lady always looked a speedster.”

Bletchley Park mare For Your Eyes Only, who foaled Secret Lady and the Blackfriars filly, won 10 Perth races when trained by Paul Jordan.

Portelli, who will start She Will Reign in Saturday’s Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield, is among a contingent of interstate buyers at the Perth sale.

“We’ve got strong representation from Melbourne and Sydney stables,” Magic Millions WA manager David Houston said.

“Vendors have been busy with pre-sale inspections.”

A son of champion sire Redoute’s Choice will be offered by Amelia Park. The colt is from Perth and Adelaide winner Hifalutin.

Stock by first-season sires Deep Field, God Has Spoken, Olympic Glory, Rubick, Safeguard, Sessions, Shooting To Win and Verrazano are expected to attract attention at the two-day sale.

Meanwhile, leading owner Bob Peters has retired Ascot carnival black-type winner Silverstream. She will be served by boom sire I Am Invincible.
