You're invited to our STABLE OPEN DAY!
Sunday 10th June at 10:00am We hope you are able to join us at 7 Manning Street, Warwick Farm for our annual open day - as always the more the merrier although after last year's crowd we require RSVP's with numbers to ensure there are enough sausages on the barbie!! We will be parading a few of our stable stars and some of the latest additions to Team Portelli plus you will have a chance to chat to our team and say hello to our current horses in training.

May Stable Newsletter

Despite the cooler weather, it has been an exciting time for the team - we have been kept busy with plenty happening here at Warwick Farm headquarters!

We have been really impressed with all of the beautiful yearlings purchased from the sales - those that have already been broken in have handled their education phase very well and we are looking forward to getting the next bunch through our system in the next few months.

A special mention must be made of Shane Rose and his team at Bimbadeen Park for the role he has played in getting many of our yearlings off to the right start - he has been the inspiration for this newsletter's 'spotlight' segment so keep scolling through for more.

As a stable we have been fortunate to keep the successes rolling lately - the team have enjoyed more winners this week with three-year-old fillies, Strome and Seababe adding to their records and showing further promise for some very loyal owners.

The recent Warwick Farm barrier trials (Friday 4th May) also highlighted a few 'smart gallopers in the making' with a couple of our unraced two-year-olds doing their best to impress. It won't be long until they are stepping out at the races on debut so don't forget to keep an eye on our upcoming runners in the weeks ahead.

We look forward to catching up with you at our Stable Open Day.

Happy racing everyone - here's to more winners!

Gary, Kellie and the Portelli Racing team x
SEABABE (Sebring Swinging Babe) 3yo Ch filly

Race record: 12 starts - 2 wins - 2 placings

Notes: She has a fiery attitude at times and knows how to kick her heels up.. relishing a staying trip as she gets challenged with further ground.. one to watch
STROME (Smart Missile x Lateral) 3yo Bay filly

Race record: 13 starts - 3 wins - 5 placings
Won at Newcastle on Sat 5th May in the Class 2 over 1600m with jockey, Scott Pollard - Congratulations to Mr G & Mrs V Williams & Mr P Jones

Notes: An obedient filly that aims to please.. found her next gear this prep with 3 wins from 4 runs.. adaptable runner that has won over 1200, 1400 & 1600 (and placed over 2100m!)
With so many excellent trial performances at our home track on Friday 4th of May, it is difficult to pick out only a few to follow but here are our top 'horses to follow' of those heading to the races in the coming weeks.

RONSTAR (Zoustar x Miss Essembee 2yo): this gelding won his trial heat in the most composed and cool fashion. He was challenged in the straight and comfortably idled past with minimal urging. He is yet to race and we are looking forward to how he responds to the task when entered for his first start (possibly as soon as next Saturday).
ASK NOT WHAT (Spirit Of Boom x Pheebles 2yo): like stablemate Ronstar, this guy won his first barrier trial. He led all the way from the gates to the post - he still looks to have plenty to learn at this stage but for his first effort, that was exactly what we hoped to see. Being by 'the sire of the moment' should mean that there will be plenty following his progress with keen interest when he hits the races this preparation.
LIPIZZAN (Sebring x Absolutely Flying 3yo): the filly maintained an exceptional race record as a two-year-old and after two barrier trials this time in, we are looking forward to seeing her proceed to the races in the next week.
Possible next target: Warwick Farm 14/05/18 - F&M BM75 1200
All Too Hard x Prerequisite colt
Purchased from the Inglis Classic sale for $40,000 - we thought this colt was an absolute steal. He is from a family that Gary is very familiar with, having trained both the dam (a 2yo winner herself) and international Gr1 winner & Royal Ascot contender, Gold Trail (who our colt looks the spitting image of)!
We are looking forward to getting him underway this month.
Not A Single Doubt x Feint colt
Purchased from Magic Millions Perth Sale for $100,000 and this very good-looking yearling is available for the ladies only!
He has been through the stable for the first time already - we were really impressed by his excellent attitude to training here at Warwick Farm and he is a beautiful mover out on the track. (Click HERE to see him working)
Pierro x Kichai colt
This quality colt was purchased from the Inglis Easter sale and proceeded straight to Bimbadeen Park for education. He had his first track work morning at Warwick Farm on Tuesday morning - he had a good look about taking it all in, his rider was happy and we really liked his effortless action (click to see video HERE). This colt had a significant pedigree update following the sales with GLENALL (on the dam's side of the family) securing another stakes a fortnight ago.

Spotlight on... BIMBADEEN PARK
This specialised horse training facility is located in Werombi, about an hour drive from the stable which means that Gary is able to visit any horses at the farm fortnightly.

The 40-acre property is run by Shane and Niki Rose who not only offer breaking in, spelling and pre-training services but also actively compete performance horses (eventing) at the top level.

So far this season, we have had almost 20 yearlings through their education system from the Portelli stable with more to follow suit in the coming weeks.

A yearling will typically spend 4 weeks there, by which point they can confidently canter around the track with a partner or on their own, go through the barriers quietly and do figure-of-eights in the open.

Once 'breaking-in' is complete, these yearlings will sometimes progress to the Warwick Farm stable to start introducing them to stable life and the track work environment.

Here is the video Bimbadeen Park sent through of our Not A Single Doubt x Feint colt learning the ropes (below).
Life after racing.. COSMIC CAMEO
The much loved son of Northern Meteor departed the stable for the last time - at 7 years old, the gelding has well and truly earned a happy retirement and he has found just that!

Although his preferred race pattern of 'lead-at-all-costs' had his connections almost tearing their hair out at times, he took them on a terrific ride racking up 49 starts and over $200,000 in prize-money along the way.

Farewell Cozzie and enjoy your new home with Laura!
